Winners of the first National Automation System Engineer Paper Contest announced

ABB continues its support to developing automation talents in China

Beijing, China, November 6, 2006-ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced today that the first National Automation System Engineer Paper Contest exclusively sponsored by ABB and organized by Chinese Association of Automation (CAA) in conjunction with the Electric Age magazine has been concluded successfully. Altogether 39 awards have been granted.

"The paper contest represents an innovation in our industry," said Professor Sun Bolin, head of the judging panel for the contest and vice president of CCA. "The event was well received by businesses, universities and design institutes. The final winners were selected among more than 200 contributions through rounds of screening. The second contest to be held soon will have sign-up from more contestants."

"It is our great pleasure to sponsor the event," said Remo Luetolf, senior vice president and head of automation products division for ABB in China and North Asia. "As a global leader in automation technology, ABB has been committed to helping foster local automation engineers. Our rapid growth in China would be impossible without the contribution of our engineering talents. The front-line engineers have completed plenty of automation system projects that deliver the cutting-edge technologies through close collaboration with their local counterparts."

"ABB will continue its support to the similar events to promote technical research, expertise exchange and people training," said Luetolf. "We believe that the second contest will be even more successful as more professionals will participate in and contribute to it."

Launched on September 28, 2005, the contest received 228 entries from businesses, research and design institutes and universities across the country. These papers dealt with signal processing and pattern recognition, system integration, system emulation, complex system and system engineering, modern industrial IT technologies, automation system project management, automation engineering education and certification, as well as their applications in a wide range of industries, including minerals, electric utilities, petroleum, mechanical manufacturing, chemical, construction, transportation, water supply, paper, and textile. The screening by the judging panel found that a majority of the papers were good in quality, rich in content, and delivered high reference values, which reflect, to a certain extent, the latest progress in automation research and application.

Following the principles of fairness, impartiality and openness, the judging panel selected, through careful review over two months, 9 entries for the first, second and third prize, and 30 entries for the award of recognition. Electric Age magazine has published all of the winning papers in a special issue.
