ABB to provide power distribution solution for Guangzhou Metro Line 5

Another firm step in partnering with Guangzhou Metro

Guangzhou, China, November 7, 2005 -ABB, the leading power and automation technologies group, announced today that it was just awarded an $11 million contract to deliver 33 kV gas-insulated switchgears (GIS) for Guangzhou Metro Line 5.

This is the third contract that ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd. has won from Guangzhou Metro Corporation, following its successful delivery of MV switchgear (GIS) products to the Line 2 and Line 3 projects.

"I am very glad to win this contract after strong competition. Guangzhou Metro is well known in China for its high demands for world-leading technologies and products, in order to keep its metro lines reliable and efficient under the high pressure driven by a large rural population," said John Yung, president of ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd., and a winner of the Chinese central government's "Friendship Award" in 1998.

"This clearly shows that we have successfully maintained our customer's confidence with proven technologies and services," Mr Yung added. He said that he is confident in carrying the long lasting relationship with Guangzhou Metro far into the future. As the largest city in South China, Guangzhou has kept improving the transportation conditions of its 11.3 million people, so as to support its rapid economic growth. The GDP of the city is expected to exceed RMB 450 billion this year. The construction of Guangzhou Metro Line consists of two phases. The first phase is 32 kilometer and is designed to be completed by December 2008. Guangzhou metro Line 2 went into operation in August 2002 and Line 3 will start operation on December 26 this year.
