ABB recognized for its contributions to the full operation of the three gorges hydropower plant ahead of schedule

Quality and reliable products and service guaranteed the smooth construction of the centurial hydropower project

Beijing, China, February 11, 2009 – ABB group, a world leader in power and automation technologies, recently announced that ABB Chongqing Transformer Co. Ltd. was recognized for its valuable contributions to the full operation of the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant ahead of schedule. This award, granted by the China Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTGPC), acknowledges ABB for its quality and reliable products and service, and its significant contributions to the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant’s commissioning at the end of 2008, one year ahead of schedule.

In addition, four ABB executives were specially issued awards, recognizing them for their “Personal Valuable Contribution”. They are Matti Stoor (Head of Transformers Unit, Power Products Division of ABB China, former General Manager of ABB Chongqing Transformer Co. Ltd.), Jianhua Huang (General Manager of ABB Zhongshan Transformer Co. Ltd., former LPT Operation Manager of ABB Chongqing Transformer Co. Ltd.), Anders Lindroth (former Chief Engineer of ABB Chongqing Transformer Co. Ltd.) and Longming Liu (Chief Engineer of ABB Chongqing Transformer Co. Ltd.).

ABB Chongqing Transformer Co. Ltd., established in 1998, has become the largest transformer factory within the ABB group, with an annual output of over 45,000 MVA.

ABB is the main equipment supplier of the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant and Three Gorges power transmission project. In June 2004, ABB Chongqing Transformer Co. Ltd. successfully won the order for the Three Gorges Right Bank project, supplying all 12 units of 840MVA/550kV three phase generator step-up transformers for the generator sets. These three phase transformers are the largest of their kind in terms of unit capacity in the China power industry.

These products, specially designed and manufactured by ABB Chongqing Transformer Co. Ltd. for the Three Gorges project, were successfully put into operation in Nov. 2008, helping to guarantee the full operation of the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant one year ahead of schedule and demonstrating the advanced R&D and production strength of ABB local ventures in China.

Bernd Muehe, head of the Power Products division of ABB North Asia Region and ABB China, said, “The Three Gorges project is a tremendous trans-century program. It is a great honor for ABB to support in the construction of such an important project. As a global leader in the power industry, ABB is committed to helping upgrade the R&D and production level of China’s relevant industries. The advanced transformers delivered to the Three Gorges project are the latest evidence of our success in this regard.”

In addition to the Three Gorges Right Bank project, ABB also played an active role in a number of other projects in the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, including providing gas insulated switchgears, medium voltage switchgears, and other equipment for the construction of power station workshops on the left bank, the overflow dam and the ship-lock. Just as importantly, ABB successfully constructed three HVDC power links from the Three Gorges to Shanghai, Changzhou and Guangdong, transmitting electricity to power-hungry regions in East and South China at high-capacity, over a long distance, with low loss. Each of these three HVDC links will meet the power demand of about 6 million households equal to all the households in Shanghai—reaching an historical milestone by helping to alleviate the current power shortage in critical regions of China.

The Three Gorges Hydropower Plant boasts 26 hydro turbine-generator units with a single unit rating capacity of 700MW, and a total average annual output of 84.7 TWh of electricity. By achieving full operation one year ahead of schedule, the project has effectively alleviated the electricity shortage in China, securing reliability and improving stability of the nation’s power supply, as well as contributing to the healthy development of the national economy.

Established in 1993, Three Gorges Corporation is responsible for the construction and operation of the Three Gorges Dam. It is also in charge of developing water resources at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and managing the construction of four other mega power plants, located at Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Wudongde, and Baihetan.
