Safe, reliable, energy-efficient electric systems enhance market competitiveness of Chinese steelmaker
Beijing, China, Oct.9, 2008--ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, recently signed a contract with Tangshan Shougang Baoye Steel Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of Shougang Group, for the latter’s newly constructed high-speed wire steel production lines. A major project of Shougang Baoye in Phase I construction, these production lines will rely on ABB’s cutting-edge electric and automation solutions to improve reliability, flexibility and energy efficiency.
Under this contract, ABB will supply energy-efficient electric systems for Shougang Baoye’s two high-speed wire steel production lines, including sophisticated AC800 Programmable Logic Controller, new AMI energy-saving motors, ACS6000 IGCT-based medium-voltage drives, and ACS800 IGBT-based low-voltage drives. ABB’s proprietary DTC control technology implemented by the medium- and low-voltage drives may ensure precise control of motor torque and speed. In one package, these advanced control and drive systems enable Shougang Baoye to reduce energy consumption for benefits of environment.
“ABB is very pleased to be a part of the fast growth of China’s steelmaking industry,” said Tobias Becker, head of Process Automation Division of ABB China, “With product mix in China’s steel industry being continuously upgraded and optimized, the international competitiveness of local steelmakers has been improving increasingly. ”
Powered by the state-of-the-art hardware and software systems delivering outstanding performance, both the two production lines scheduled for completion by September 2009 will produce 60t of twistless hot-rolled wire rod every year, according to plan of Shougang Baoye.
Since 1894 when it supplied the world’s first roller motor for a steel production line, ABB has always been committed to providing sophisticated solutions for customers in steel and non-ferrous metal industry. In China, building upon its proven expertise and outstanding local service competence, ABB has been maintaining long-term relation with leading steelmakers including Shougang, BaoStell and ShaSteel. To come closer to Chinese market and respond to demands of local customers more rapidly, in 2007, ABB moved the global headquarters of its Metal Business Unit to Shanghai. This makes ABB best positioned to tailor solutions for Chinese customers with stronger local presence.
A subsidiary of Shougang Group, Tangshan Shougang Baoye Steel was opened in October 2007. The Phase I project of the company, scheduled for ramp-up by the end of September 2009, will yield 600t steel products each year. According to the company’s plan, after the Phase II is completed by March 2010, it will become a major premium hot-rolled wire rod producer in China’s coastal areas.
