Beijing, China, May 28, 2003 – ABB, the global power and automation technology company, said today it has won a US$ 6 million (RMB 50 million) contract from the East China Electrical Power Group Corporation (ECEPGC) for integrated IT systems which will increase the East China Electric Power Grid’s efficiency and provide it with the country’s first regional trading system.

Under terms of the agreement, ABB will install a SCADA Energy Management System at ECEPGC’s power network dispatching center, which will supervise and control its power transmission network and optimize its operations. In addition, ABB will supply a SABLE™ Market Operations System to provide the infrastructure for regional energy trading in East China. The systems, comprising both hardware and software, will be supplied by ABB’s operations in Santa Clara, California, USA, and are scheduled for operation in mid-2005.

"ABB was selected over other bidders due to their superior technology and delivery record for similar systems to the largest such power networks and wholesale power markets worldwide", said Xu Hang, Deputy General Manager, East China Electrical Power Group Corporation.

“These are the first integrated energy management and trading systems to be applied in a power network in China,” said Peter Leupp, Chairman and President of ABB China. “As the leading provider of elecricity control systems and deregulated power market technology worldwide, we believe that this project will become an important reference project for China’s continued development of a national grid.”

When the Chinese Government has finalized the rules and structure for the country’s electricity market, the ABB SABLE™ system will be used to operate ECEPGC’s power market, facilitating electricity trades between market participants while observing market rules and operational constraints. Four provincial utility companies and one municipal utility company will be involved in this system: Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian and Shanghai.
