ABB Powertrain assembly line technology enables Wuxi Diesel Engine Works to maintain leadership position

Beijing, China, September 9, 2002 – ABB, the global power and automation technology group, announced today it has signed a contract worth US$ 9 million with Wuxi Diesel Engine Works, to build a new assembly line for their newly developed heavy-duty four and six cylinder CA6DL diesel engine.

“Our leading edge technology in Powertrain assembly worldwide, as well as over US$80 million installed base in China with major customers such as Shanghai General Motors, Shanghai Volkswagon and First Automobile Works -VW were the key factors in winning the contract,” says Mr. James Li, Head of Auotmotive Industries China.

Wuxi Diesel Engine Works, a subsidiary of First Automobile Works, is a key manufacturer of diesel engines in China with an annual capacity of 120,000 units, and occupying the major share on vehicle diesel engine market. With the new assembly line to be provided by ABB, Wuxi Diesel will further extend its leadership position in the market place.

ABB Powertrain assembly solution will assist Wuxi Diesel Engine Works control the production quality effectively. The engines will be assembled in four sections: piston sub-, cylinder head-, short block- and long block assembly line. The project will be executed jointly by ABB China and Sweden, with a delivery date scheduled in September 2003.
