ABB reaffirms commitment to CSR programs in China

RMB 2 million to benefit Shanghai elderly and college students

ABB invites participation in its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs

Shanghai, May 12, 2010 -- ABB, the global power and automation technology group, underscored its commitment to CSR initiatives in China while announcing today to donate RMB 1 million to nursing homes of elderly residents in Shanghai, and another RMB 1 million to in-need university students. The announcement was made during the annual ABB Automation World, held in Shanghai from May 12-13.

An integral aspect of ABB’s corporate culture and values include the support of society’s vulnerable. Both its leadership and employees support passionately the corporate social responsibility programs. The company invites people from all walks of life to join hands in its commitment to better society.

For the past 3 years, ABB staff in Shanghai have regularly visited the elderly nursing homes -- sometimes bringing along their family members. Many have volunteered to take residents to public parks and staged performances during traditional Chinese festivals such as Elderly Festival and significant Western holidays such as Mother’s Day. Approximately 250 ABB employees have given more than 1,000 hours to these activities.

In addition, ABB staff have strongly supported company calls for individual donations, independently sponsoring improvements to Tianshan Nursing Home. The child of one employee even donated his personal savings. As a result, living conditions and areas, such as bedrooms, bathrooms and showers, have been greatly improved. Over the course of a previous 3-year CSR program, ABB donated RMB 1 million to improve 15 nursing homes in Shanghai’s remote suburbs, including upgrades to lighting, bedrooms, kitchen facilities, showering facilities, air-conditioning and emergent telephone systems. More than 1,700 seniors benefited.

With its CSR programs supporting education, ABB helps at-need students over the course of several years. Since 2005, ABB has given RMB 1 million annually to the ABB-New Great Wall Fund for College Students. The fund finances and supports college students majoring in the fields of power and automation – thereby enabling them to complete their studies. With today’s gift of RMB 1 million, the total ABB has provided to this initiative reaches more than RMB 6 million.
