2004-11-10 - Built on 30 years of world leading robot technology, IRC5 comes packed with fresh possibilities for faster processes, shorter cycle times and more efficient production concepts. The new controller is simple to set up for a broad range of applications, and features standard modules for easy adaptation to customer needs. Thanks to its smooth PC communication capabilities and graphical teach pendant unit, IRC5 is a revolution in user-friendliness.
Extending robot control
A leader in motion technology, ABB is now offering the most comprehensive motion control package on the market. In fact, IRC5 includes a powerful novelty, MultiMove, allowing the control of up to 4 robots and a total of 36 axes from just the one controller. Thanks to this sophisticated solution, different robot types of varying sizes are readily combined. Common work objects can be shared between machines, enabling complex coordinated patterns.
In essence, MultiMove permits applications that were previously not feasible, such as multiple robots operating on an object moved by a single or multi-axes positioner. Benefits include cut cycle times and superior process results.
Modular controller meets fluctuating needs
The design of the control and drive modules allows users to adapt IRC5 to changing demands.
It's easy to expand when there's a need to increase production capacity - customers simply add more functionality.
In this case, modular also means user-friendly. Controller modules can be distributed 75 m apart for maximum flexibility. Furthermore, the modules can be positioned against the
wall, close to each other, minimizing the use of floor space. And with front access on all connections, customers will see a reduction in downtime - saving time and money in the process.
A flexible solution
FlexPendant, ABB's new graphical teach pendant unit and part of the IRC5 package, is another key novelty. With its Windows-based display, customized menus, touch screen, and ergonomic design, operators can look forward to rapidly understanding the essentials of this new tool. Furthermore, FlexPendant offers not only enhanced language support (including Asian characters), but also a multitude of custom design possibilities using the latest Microsoft programming tools.
