ABB wins $3 million wind power orders in China

Impel the development of clean and renewable power industry

Beijing, China, June 7, 2006 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has just won two contracts worth more than $3 million to provide wind power products to the Rudong wind power project in East China's Jiangsu Province and Tongyu wind power project in Northeast China's Jilin Province.

"We are pleased to contribute to developing wind power in China," said Bernd Muehe, head of power products division of ABB in China. "The two major orders represent ABB's full entry into China's wind power industry. Backed by ABB's successful experience in wind power industry, we worked as one team to provide the optimized integrated solutions to customers."

By the terms of the contracts, ABB High Voltage Switchgear Co.,Ltd (CNTHB) and ABB Shanghai Transformer Co.,Ltd (CNTDS) will supply 40 sets of 35kV Compact Secondary Substation (CSS) for the First phase of Jiangsu Rudong wind power project, including 40 unit of 1600kVA 3-phase two-winding oil-immersed step-up transformers and 40 unit of 35kV Ring Main Units (RMU) as well as accessories. CNTDS will also offer 50 units of Pad-Mounted transformer for Jilin longyuantongyu wind power project.

Developed by Jiangsu Longyuan Wind Power Company, the Jiangsu Rudong wind power project have a total installed capacity of 100.5 MW for its phase I project. The installed capacity for its phase II project will be 50MW. As a key utility project in Jilin Province, which is constructed by Longyuan Electric Power Group, Jilin Tongyu wind power project is expected to have an installed capacity of 206MW with total investment of around RMB800 million. Once complete, the project will generate electricity of 231.59 million kWh annually, which will save 8.1 tons of standard coal. The project will be put into production by August 2007.

The two wind power concession projects are part of the strategy launched by the National Development and Reform Commission of China in an effort to promote the development of green power in China.

China possesses abundant wind power resource. It is reported that China accounts 9.2% ratio of the global wind resource, possessing the biggest potential to be commercialized and developed in large scale. The Renewable Energy Law passed this year clearly demonstrates the substitution of renewable energy in China's future energy development. By 2010, the total installed capacity is expected to reach 30000MW, the total installed capacity of renewable energy such as wind power and solar energy wind will account for 8% to 10%. At present the installed capacity of wind power in China only account for 0.11% of the total electricity installed capacity.

ABB is the world's leading supplier to the whole wind power industry. Wind parks around the world use ABB products like generators, motors, transformers low- and medium-voltage equipment to create power, as well as technology to link them to local power grids. Working in the wind power industry also encapsulates ABB's triple bottom line approach to business: such projects lead to clear economic, environmental and societal benefits.
