All-round support covers donations of books and equipment as wells scholarship
Beijing, China, October 13, 2006 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has continued its support to Xiamen University of Technology (XMUT) by awarding 2006 ABB scholarship to its students as well as donating ABB technical books and training equipment to the university.
"Social development starts from education. Knowledge is the only way to change the fate of a person, a family, a company, a country and even the world," said Bernd Muehe, Head of Power Products of ABB China and North Asian region. "The contribution underlines our commitment to supporting China in its effort of developing young talents."
Innovation is the key to keeping ABB young and vigorous, which is brought forth by talented people. And ABB expects the universities and colleges in China will keep turning out talented people for us. XMUT is one of the China universities that supported our development in the past, and will surely support our high expectation for keeping sustainable development tomorrow, Muehe added.
In June 2005 ABB established a scholarship and opened a training center for the electrical and mechanical engineering students in XMUT.
According to the agreement, ABB donates RMB 150,000 each year to award the top students from the electrical and mechanical engineering department. The money is also used to aid the financially disadvantaged students with good academic performance.
Located in ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co. Ltd., the training center offers the engineering students opportunities of combining their knowledge with practice. This summer 14 XMUT students received their one-month training in the center. In September four teachers from the university's power and electricity division also got trained here, which helped them experience ABB's state-of-the-art technologies.
Last year, ABB donated 100,000 US dollars and established a fund in collaboration with China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, one of the largest NGOs in poverty alleviation, aiming at helping the college students in poverty to complete their college education. Up to date, the fund has financed 400 students from 20 colleges or universities majoring in power engineering.
Xiamen is one of the most important cities for ABB in China. Five ABB local companies grow very fast here. As ABB's first joint venture in China, ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd. has grown into one of the largest medium voltage switchgear and circuit manufacturers in China. ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co. Ltd. and ABB Xiamen Low Voltage Equipment Co. Ltd top in ranking of China's electric equipment companies.
