ABB wins major electrical package order from Baosteel

ABB’s Cutting-edge technologies ensure reliable power supply for the steel giant

Beijing, China, August 17, 2006 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today that it has won an electrical package order totaling around 7.8 million USD from Baosteel Group, China’s largest steel manufacturer.

Under the terms of the contract, ABB will design and supply a complete 220/33kV Electrical Arc Furnace Substation package including Static Var Compensator (SVC) system, a key element in the power supply to a new Bloom product steel plant of Baosteel Group.

“Our proven technology will secure the reliable power supply and operation of the new steel plant,” said Daniel Assandri, head of Power Systems Division for ABB in China. “The order further confirms the trust of Baosteel Group on our technology. The award will reinforce our long-term cooperative partnership with Baosteel.”

Assandri added that SVC is an ABB innovated technology. We dedicate special design to cover the specific needs of Baosteel Group. ABB is the global leader for Flexible AC Transmission Systems and particularly for industrial SVCs. This project will beef up this position in China’s market.

The Shanghai-based Baosteel Group ranks among the world’s top steel producers with its annual output topping 20 million tons in 2005. It produces high demand products for both domestic and international market. The group is a long-term customer to ABB in China. The Bloom product project is the latest in a series of orders from Baosteel group. ABB has already successfully delivered power systems for the Baoshan Iron & Steel’s Phase 3 development, 110kV GIS Extension, Ladle Furnace Substation Retrofit, Xinbao Substation Retrofit, and 2nd Ladle Furnace Substation Retrofit projects to name just a few.
