Energy saving technology tops agenda for ABB

Doubles production and launches new product to curb energy consumption

Shanghai, China, April 25, 2005 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology company, today launched a full range of flame-proof motors which reach very high efficiency ratings - in turn helping customers save energy, while slashing harmful CO2 emissions.

"As the central government recently indicated, in addition to securing more reliable power supply, there is a great deal we can and should do to reduce energy consumption," said Anders Jonsson, senior vice president and head of ABB's Automation Technologies business in China. "For example, motors account for 65 percent of industrial energy consumption. The energy efficiency level of ABB motors sold in China is 1.5 percent to 2 percent higher than average, which means 1,500MWh of power is saved for Chinese customers annually.

"In addition, energy efficient technology like ABB drives control the speed of motors, much like the gas pedal on a car. Whatever product you are making, from steel to pulp and paper or chemicals, drives allow you to regulate speed, rather than running the motor constantly at full speed."

According to ABB, this has saved 10,000 GWh of power for customers in China in the last ten years - equivalent to two years' power output from a nuclear power plant.

Jonsson made his comments during the ten-year anniversary of ABB Shanghai Motor Ltd., a joint venture between Shanghai Electric Corporation and ABB (China) Ltd. The newly expanded company, located in Minghang Economic and Technological Development Zone, has about half of its total revenues from export to the European and Asia Pacific markets. To meet growing demand for highly efficient and safe motors, ABB in parallel launched a full range of ClassⅡC flame-proof motors, which better ensure working security for chemical, oil and gas, and marine customers in China. The full-range of new motors meet the EU efficiency levelⅡ.

Jonsson said energy efficient products are an ABB strength - from the high-voltage direct current links running power from the Three Gorges to cities like Shanghai, to the aforementioned motors and drives, and the control systems ABB offers to optimize industrial production. "These technologies, developed by ABB over more than 100 years, will help us make good on Premier Wen Jiabao's five major focus areas, from the enforcement of energy saving measures to the creation of new power capacity." he said.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 102,000 people. ABB in China (www.abb.com.cn) employs around 8,000 people in branches in 30 major cities.
