Macau, China, October 22, 2003 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group announced today it has been awarded an order worth US$4 million by the Companhia de Electricidade de Macau - CEM S.A., for the erection and commissioning of a 66 kV gas insulated switchgear (GIS) substation in Macau. The order includes an option to build a second identical substation.
"Due to our strong local presence and close co-operation with the customer to develop the right solution, we are proud to be awarded this project for the design and construction of a 66 kV substation," said Daniel Assandri, vice president and head of power systems business of ABB in China, Hong Kong and Macau.
"One of the challenges of the project is to develop a solution of the substation that would minimize the visual impact to the surrounding future tourism development," said Daniel Assandri. "ABB has come up with an elegant solution to fit the 66 kV GIS bays, 66/11 kV transformers, 11 kV air insulated switchgear (AIS) panels, 11 kV capacitor banks as well as protection and control systems into the limited space provided; while allowing enough space for possible future extension of the substation. In addition to our scope of supply, we assisted CEM to select the best suited local products. We expect this form of cooperation be the model for developing future business activities between CEM and ABB."
Macau is currently devoting to large-scale infrastructure developments for the growing tourism industry. With an outlook for increasing electricity demand, more substations of the similar design will be built in the coming years.
