ABB wins major low voltage product order from Guangzhou Metro project

Contribute to reliable and efficient operation of metro lines

Guangzhou, China, December 7, 2005 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced today that it has been awarded a contract totaling around $ 4.9 million to deliver 0.4 kV ABB-MNS low voltage switchgears for Guangzhou Metro project. The products will be used on Guangzhou Metro Line 4 and Line 5 to ensure their continuous, reliable and high efficient operation.

This is the latest one in the series of major metro orders won by ABB Xiamen Low Voltage Equipment Co., Ltd. The cooperation between ABB Xiamen Low Voltage Equipment Co., Ltd. and Guangzhou Metro Corporation started in 1997 when the company obtained its first order to provide low voltage products for Guangzhou Metro Line 1. The company has also successfully executed projects for Beijing Metro and Shenzhen Metro.

"We are delighted to contribute to the massive metro project that is well-known in China for its strict requirements for world-class technologies and products," noted Poh Cheng Gay, head of low voltage products and systems for ABB in China and general manager of ABB Xiamen Low Voltage Equipment Co., Ltd. "We won the repeat order after beating fierce competition. This selection has confirmed our customer’s confidence in ABB’s state-of-the-art technology, our ability to offer the best solutions and service, and our extensive experience in metro industry."

ABB’s MNS technology is a space and cost-saving solution that allows customers to maximize productivity through its reliable operation, ease of maintenance and compact configuration options. Based on the latest technology from ABB in Germany, ABB Xiamen Low Voltage Equipment Co., Ltd. has been producing MNS low voltage switchgears since 1994. The products are widely applied in the field of power generation, distribution and transmission in industries, including nuclear applications, metro, chemical, oil and gas, pulp and paper, electronics, telecommunications and commercial construction.

As the largest city in South China, Guangzhou has kept improving the transportation conditions of its 11.3 million people, so as to support its rapid economic growth. The GDP of the city is expected to exceed RMB 450 billion this year. The Guangzhou municipal government has decided to invest at least 5 billion yuan annually in subway construction. The city’s metro network currently has 2 lines operational, 3 under construction and 4 planned. It will have 255 kilometers of metro lines by 2010.

In addition to the low voltage product order, ABB was awarded an $11 million contract in November this year to deliver 33 kV gas-insulated switchgears (GIS) for Guangzhou Metro Line 5. The GIS order is the third contract that ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd. has won from Guangzhou Metro Corporation, following its successful delivery of MV switchgear products to the Line 2 and Line 3 projects.

Xiamen is one of the most important cities for ABB in China. Five ABB companies grow very fast here. Established in 1994, ABB Xiamen Low Voltage Equipment Co., Ltd. is the biggest low voltage switchgear manufacturer in China. ABB Xiamen Switchgear Co., Ltd. was founded in 1992. It is ABB’s first joint venture in China. The company has now grown into one of the largest medium voltage switchgear and circuit breaker manufacturers in the world. In September this year the two companies were listed among "China’s top 100 electric enterprises" by China’s influential industry magazine "Electric Age," together with 6 other ABB local companies
