Automation solutions will facilitate growth of the pharmaceutical industry

Beijing, China, November 17, 2004 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, today launched its life sciences business in China at the China-Pharm 2004 Exhibition.

"China's pharmaceutical industry is growing rapidly and shows great potential for our automation, power and validation solutions," said Neil Enright, vice president and head of ABB's chemical and pharmaceutical business in China "We are a market leader in Europe and the U.S., with a broad range of automation services, and would like to offer these to China."

Statistics indicate that China's pharmaceutical market is growing at an annual rate of 15 percent. Annual revenues are expected to reach $14 billion in 2005, and $24 billion by 2010, making China the fifth largest pharmaceutical market after U.S., Japan, Germany and France.
At the China-Pharm exhibition ABB will demonstrate its newest technologies, from Industrial IT automation systems to process, robotics, tablet and powder analyzers. One of the highlights is ABB's Industrial IT System 800xA, which provides customers a better way to achieve measurable productivity and profitability improvements. It extends the scope of traditional control systems to include all automation functions in a single operation.

"We are confident that our technology solutions, combined with our processes expertise, will enable our customers to sharpen their competitive edge and achieve substantial benefits in the country's pharmaceutical market," said Enright.

ABB's life sciences customers include Bayer, Pfizer, Sanofi-Synthelabo, Novo Nordisk, Rhodia and Roche to name just a few, but ABB sees potential from Chinese customers like Xian-Janssen, 999 Group, Harbin Pharmaceutical Ltd. and Jilin Xiuzheng Pharmaceutical Group, among others.
